NJ Spots: Playa Bowls

Not So Fun Fact: there's not a single Liquiteria in New Jersey- barbaric, I know. We do, however, have Playa Bowls which is basically Jersey's take on a juice / smoothie bowl shop with a beach theme. I still prefer Liquiteria but to be fair I haven't really given Playa Bowls a real chance considering I always order the same pitaya bowl because it's the most photogenic (I know who I am, okay).  Playa Bowls offers juices, smoothies, coffee, and of course, a fun assortment of creatively named bowls made from acai, pitaya, chia, coconut, oatmeal, and greens. There's definitely more options here than Liquiteria and now that they've opened up a location that doesn't require a long drive down the shore (yay New Brunswick!) (boo possibly running into people I know from high school in Rutgers territory), I'll maybe be trying more of their menu.

My favorite thing about Playa Bowls is that they really care about their aesthetic- all of their locations feature brightly painted walls with colorful murals, aka the perfect backdrop of any foodie's dreams. The New Brunswick spot is smaller than its Belmar counterpart but brightens Mine Street with its surf shack style decor and whimsical outdoor seating.

I always order the Electric Mermaid, one of the pitaya bowls topped with kiwi, pineapple, mango, granola, coconut flakes, and honey. I really love the taste of honey mixed in with pitaya- it's satisfying sweet and smooth. On the other hand, I've never finished this bowl. It is a pretty generous serving but I think it's probably because the topping to pitaya ratio is waaaay uneven. So once I've eaten all the toppings mixed in, I don't really enjoy the pitaya as much. The hot pink-magenta blend definitely makes for a good photo though (always my weakness).

My friend decided to try the Nutelloco bowl, one of the coconut bowls topped with granola, banana, strawberry, coconut flakes, raw cacao, and nutella drizzle. I had a bite and thought it was yummy- it's a good treat for anyone obsessed with Nutella for sure.

I'm going to try to give Playa Bowls more of an actual chance to measure up to Liquiteria (don't worry bae you'll always be my #1) so fingers crossed! The NB Playa Bowls is really such a cute shop- I really like the set up they have outside with the bright turquoise chairs and the lights hanging above the little alcove they built. So if you're in Jersey and craving a smoothie or maybe an acai bowl, hmu- I'll come to Playa Bowls with you.
